I usually do not write reviews here. But, because of my experience with ALL of the Slant Fin humidifiers that I have bought over the past 4 years (GF200 and GF300), I wanted to let others know that there are issues with the products.GOOD: Humidification: The productivity is not fantastic and is not suitable for large open rooms. For enclosed rooms like bedrooms or playrooms, they work very well. The plus is the warmth of the moisture (this is essentially a boiling pot). Occasionally, gurgling aside (from boiling), they are silent.GOOD?: “Bacteria free” operation: UV lights and boiling supposedly make the products “virtually bacteria free,” always a excellent thing.NOW BAD: Cleaning and maintenance: Our water is neither hard nor soft (Lake Michigan water in Chicago suburbs). The mineral buildup/scaling is very substantial on plastic and metal parts and very hard to clean. Given that they need to be cleaned every week or so, it is very time-consuming.NOW REALLY BAD: All of the Slant Fin humidifiers that I have owned had tribulations with water level sensors. The electrodes (2 each in GF 300) get corroded and rust away after 1 or 2 years (usually shortly after the close of warranty). The two probes (spaced about an 1/2 inch), when dipped in water, apparently transmit/receive a very low voltage electricity, completing a hegemony circuit and indicating there is water in the tank. If they don’t transmit electricity (i.e., no water in the tank), the boiling pot turns itself off. The problem is that the metal probes get corroded and get covered with rust/deterioration. Because they don’t transmit/receive electricity, even if there is plenty of water in the unit, the unit shuts itself off. At the start, you can scrape the deterioration/mineral buildup on the metal probes with your finger nails. Eventually, the metal probes/electrodes literally rust away. That literally renders the full unit inoperable and, thus, worthless. NOW THE ABSOLUTE WORST: “Consumer Benefit”: I have sent emails, written letters and left voice mail messages. I questioned whether I could buy the probes or send the units back for benefit. I have NEVER received any response. It is also very hard to get any live person. When I did get a person at the “consumer benefit” department, that person claimed that she did not work in that department and transferred me to the “right” department, sending me into the voice mail maze hell, only to get disconnected after 10 minutes.OVERALL ASSESSMENT: The manufactured goods works well, as intended, for about a year or two. The promise of “bacteria free operation” and warm moisture made me not remember about the extremely burdensome cleaning. I recommended these products to all of my friends and relatives in the first year of operation, accounting for as many as 20+ units. Given that a large majority of them are having the same tribulations as my units, I reckon this is a serious design defect that Slant Fin is refusing to take up. I am sorry that I bought and recommended these units. Thus, given what appears to be a serious design flaw (re water-level probes) coupled with the worst consumer benefit I have ever experienced for a consumer manufactured goods, I can no longer recommend any Slant Fin humidifiers.

I previously had the less vital model GF-300, but after that one broke, I contacted consumer benefit owing to their web site. I previously read some of the reviews to the effect that “their consumer benefit is non-existent”, which would have place me off had I not thought to give it a try anyway. The next day I received a answer from consumer benefit detailing directions for getting benefit on my humidifier. I followed the directions and today I received a replacement unit in the mail. BTW, they replaced the unit with a larger one, the GF-350, which makes up for my having to pay for postage to send the unit to them. While I agree that these models do demand a bit of work to maintain, what humidifier that doesn’t pollute your air w/ germs and dust doesn’t?Furthermore, if you can, try using purified water in the unit, so you won’t have to scrape off the mineral deposits from the heating chamber. That’s what I’ll be doing with my replacement unit. I gave the Slant-Fin a high rating because I am very satisfied with their consumer benefit, and especially relieved after having read some of the negative reviews.

We had a similar experience with our GF-350 as other reviewers. It was a excellent humidifier that was something of a pain to clean, and after 2-3 years, the emaciated small water level sensors broke off while trying to clean the deterioration off. So, leading into this winter, we were due for a new humidifier. I read the reviews and upon realizing that other people had the same problem, looked at some other brands. But I didn’t really see anything that looked better, so spent $115 on a new GF-350, high and mighty a lifespan of 3 years.

The new model has completely redesigned water level sensors … they’re no longer spindly small things that look like they’ll break after a while – they have substance and must stand up to continual cleanings. A couple other changes … the drain hole & plug in the bottom are gone – the new cleaning directions are to simply turn the base over to dump out the vinegar (never really saw the point of the drain; it was just one more thing to keep clean !) And the metal scraper is gone. The new cleaning directions just talk about using vinegar and wiping it clean. I’m hoping that mineral buildup won’t stick so terribly if we never scrape up the stainless steel to start with.

So we’ve yet to clean it (and I don’t guess any major change there any time soon), but the unit seems quieter – more like white noise, with less “gurgling” as water drops from the tank, and less noise from heating the water.

All in all, a excellent manufactured goods has been made better.

I loved this humidifier. It is capable of moist the air within my over 400 sq. ft. room very quickly… silent… simple to clean even with my hard well-water. Like most of the small electric applicance built nowadays, this manufactured goods irrevocably no longer worked after the 3-yr warranty was up. My hot pot has 3-yr warrantly (by another manufacturer)bunged effective after it passed the warranty cycle, so as my toaster oven. Comparing to more 5 other less vital humidifiers I bought previous to, which either bunged effective within the first year, or was extremely hard to clean, SlantFin 350 provides me much more value collectively. Because of this, I reckon 4.5 stars is more appropriate. But, I still give it a 5-star because it is still the best one among the six of them I got in the pass 5 years.

I agree with much of what has been said here, particularly by K&H enthusiast and CT Yankee.

But, I can’t stress ample how cumbersome cleaning this thing is. Vinegar doesn’t start to touch the cement-like calcification that I experience in a matter of three or four days with this unit. A “quick” cleaning for me last winter would take me 45 minutes. Soaking in white vinegar helped only slightly. I looked-for an ice pick to try and remove the plaque on the stainless steel boiler cup. I’m not kidding – it’s the functional equivalent of barnacles.

I haven’t taken the unit out again since last season because I’m dreading the maintenance involved.

I’m only one opinion here, but I’m seriously thinking of going back to cold mist to set free me from the perpetual drudgery.
